Korean American National Survey

The survey is completely bilingual and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and covers the following areas  1) Demographics, 2) Economic Activity and Employment, 3) Culture and Identity, 4) Family, Health, and Social Welfare, and 5) Religion and Politics.  The resulting database of information will be the largest-ever for Korean Americans and will be made available as open source, impacting scholars, community leaders, non-profit agencies as well as U.S. and Korean government agencies trying to better understand and serve Korean Americans.

Please assist us by reaching out to your networks and organizations in distributing and encouraging participation in this survey!  We can also provide a special “group code” for organizations/groups/churches etc. anyone who has a large enough membership base that they would like to understand better through a completely confidential comprehensive survey.  At the end of the research analysis period, we would be able to provide you with information about your group versus the national norms for Korean-Americans.

To participate in the survey, please go to:  www.koreanamericannationalsurvey.org  or www.kansurvey.org .  A link to the survey is also available on the www.netkal.org site.

To encourage participation we have prepared some raffle prizes. One must complete the survey to be eligible and prizes include:

- 2 Free Roundtrip Tickets to Seoul, Korea (1st prize - 1 winner)

- 1 Big Screen Television (2nd prize - 1 winner)

- 1 iPod (3rd prize - 5 winners)

The most easily distributed format will be online – but we are more than happy to provide hard copies to those who request them.  Please be reminded that 2nd generation and younger Korean Americans are often underrepresented in these types of studies.  We hope that the bilingual online format will make it easy for more of you to participate!!

Thank you again for your assistance and let us know if you have any questions.  Please contact us for a group code for your organization, if you’re interested!  Below is language about the survey in Korean for those individuals organizations which might be better served “in-language.”

Summer Opportunity with LiNK

Two years ago, in the summer of 2006, nearly 40 activists from all over the world participated in LiNK’s Project: Sunshine initiative. Delegates arranged to take university finals early, quit their jobs, and rearranged summer plans to participate. For three weeks they held daily symposiums, lectures, debates and screenings, coupled with exciting and dramatic street activism, awareness efforts, dance exhibitions, concerts, and various stunts. The aim was to engage Korea’s student and academic communities on the issue, spark a grassroots movement for the forgotten North Korean people, and raise questions about the South Korean government’s Sunshine Policy. The effort was a success - gaining coverage in major South Korean newspapers, high-level meetings with South Korean government officials, National Assembly members, and even a former President.

2008 marks an unprecedented time for renewed hope and change with the new administration and its pledge toward human rights in North Korea.

This year’s Project: Real Sunshine is seeking skilled and qualified applicants to continue where we left off and to take the initiative to a bigger, louder, and stronger level.

Application Deadline Extended: Monday April 7

Taxi Service!

Hey KASCON!

For those who want a taxi service from the airport to the Emory Conference Center, we have made deals with the local taxi companies to offer rides for a flat fee of 40 dollars. This rate only applies to and from the airport and the hotel. We recommend prearranging rides with these companies and even grouping up with others to split up the cost! These companies all offer vans as well, so it would be in be in your best interest to group up and share rides with other KASCON attendees. (One option is through the KASCON XXII Facebook Wall) Another option is to ride the MARTA train to Lindbergh Station, and then the MARTA bus directly to Emory Conference Center. For any additional questions, please email kasconatemory@gmail.com. See you soon!!

Why KASCON?

Hear what others are saying about KASCON22!

Bryan“Having gone to KASCON20 at Princeton three years ago, I can say this conference is really about three E’s:Enlightenment, Engagement, and Empowerment. KASCON provides a unique opportunity for us to learn about, discuss, and respond to a wide range of issues relevant to both the Korean and Korean American populations with not only influential speakers but also our peers. While the conference does provide this invaluable forum, it also gives you the chance to meet hundreds of people from across the nation and have a genuinely awesome experience!”

-Bryan Ko (From the University of Pennsylvania)

Melinda“I’m really excited to attend KASCON this year. Although I’ve never gone before, I’ve heard from past participants that it’s a really fun, interesting experience. I think it’s cool that there’s a conference that addresses the issues facing young Korean-Americans and that it’s all student-run. I think it’ll be something I can really relate to and will affect the way I think about being a Korean-American.”

-Melinda Kim (From Wash University in St. Louis)
